Club name: Rolling Readers
Spokeswoman: Kristin Dontigney, Woodstock
How often they meet: Every weekday, on their ride to and from work
About this club: This club got started in September, when commuters Dontigney, Lynn Perigard, Candice Ahrens and Suzanne Guillebeau decided to turn their shared drive to and from work into an unconventional book club. "Suzanne thought it would be an interesting way to break up our 40-minute commute each way," Dontigney said. "And we thought we might learn some new things and enjoy trying out different books." The members meet at a Commuter Club parking area on Ga. 92 at 6:50 a.m. each day. Once in the car, passengers catch up on family news and then take turns reading aloud. Guillebeau reads in the morning by flashlight, and Dontigney reads during afternoon rush hour. They read all types of books, including self-help, fiction and nonfiction. "We read together as a group, which I think makes us unique," said Guillebeau, adding that by taking three cars off the road, they are saving a pound of pollution for each mile driven.
Recently read: "Same Kind of Different As Me" by Ron Hall, Denver Moore and Lynn Vincent
What it's about: Said Dontigney: "It is about two people who live completely different lifestyles and come into a chance meeting. They end up having a profound effect on each other's lives."
What members thought: "We all loved it," Dontigney said. "The humor in it was fantastic. There were some very sad parts that made us cry. That is an interesting way to drive down I-75 in rush hour. It was a huge eye-opener on how two people can be so completely opposite and yet impact each other's lives so greatly that they end up being as close as brothers."
