What’s Your Carbon Footprint?

Carbon FootprintYou know global warming is a problem but figure you can’t do much to fix it, right? Wrong! By knowing your carbon footprint, you can lessen your negative effect on the environment in a variety of ways. Carbon footprint’s definition is: a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide. These include the usual suspects like car and air travel and heating and cooling homes, but also include less-thought of categories such as food miles and embodied carbon. How much food you purchase from non-local sources and the process costs involved in products and services make up food miles and embodied carbon. Carbon emissions from consumable products make up over half of the average western household’s emissions!

To calculate your carbon footprint and learn how you can reduce it, grab a couple utility bills, add up your car mileage, the number of trips you take in a year, and visit http://www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.html. The calculator will tell you how many trees to plant to offset your primary footprint, as well as other suggestions to minimize your carbon emissions.

Commuter Club can help reduce your carbon footprint and put money back in your wallet! Join a vanpool, start a carpool, or personalize your commute by bicycling or riding a bus. Each of these will lessen your carbon footprint and save you money simultaneously. To learn more and find the solution that works for you, give us a call at (770) 859-2331.

Love Your Ride to Work? These Vanpoolers Do!

Rolanda VanpoolWhen you’ve ridden in a vanpool for a year, the other passengers that were once strangers become friends. Developing new friendships is one of the many perks of joining a vanpool.

Rolanda Mitchell and her crew in VP 23684 commute from Rainbow Drive in Decatur to Wildwood Office Park. VP 23684, affectionately called the “Soul Van” by its riders, is recognizable by the silver disco ball ornament seen swinging from the rearview mirror.

This group of women, who mostly grew up in the 70s disco era, celebrates birthdays, baby showers and other special occasions with cards and homemade baked goods. But they don’t limit their camaraderie to inside the van. They spend the first Friday of each quarter trying out a new restaurant in the Atlanta area as a group.

“We all feel truly blessed to be sharing a ride with and getting to know such a wonderful group of people,” Rolanda said.

What makes your vanpool unique? Let Ginny Rainey know at grainey@commuterclub.com, and we may feature your vanpool in an upcoming e-newsletter.
